I have recently started a project which was borne out of an accidental/experimental shot of the two pictures on the wall. My photographic love of the female form has been given impetus by the discovery of the work of Mona Kuhn. I’d like to somehow meld her work with that of Edward Weston, who provided me with my initial passion and drive to work towards a degree in photography through his recordings of the human form.

Kuhn has used the lens to distort her images, using a shallow depth of field to push forward a sense of innocence, calm, tranquility and harmony. She has also used the technique of ‘mis-focusing’ on the glass in front of the model which cleverly ‘clothes’ her. Weston uses different techniques to clothe his models, by cleverly using cast shadows, and also using position to create abstraction.
My project https://eledhwen.blog/projects/the-distorting-lens/ will be a long term one, with a number of ideas that I would like to incorporate and develop. My aim is to experiment with the use of hand held, long (6 seconds) exposures, which I will convert to black and white. The subject matter will take the form of the female figure, both clothed and nude.
